Alappuzha, also known as Alleppey, is a town in Alappuzha District of Kerala state  in southern India. Alleppey / Alappuzha is the hub for backwater tourism in Kerala. A town with picturesque canals, backwaters, beaches, and lagoons, it was described as the Venice of the East by Lord Curzon. It is the administrative headquarters of Alappuzha District. Alleppey has a wonderful past. Though the present town owes its existence to the sagacious Diwan Raja Kesavadas in the second half of 18th century,  the district of Alappuzha figures in classical Literature. Kuttanad, the rice bowl of Kerala with the unending stretch of paddy fields, small streams and canals with lush green coconut palms , was well known even from the early periods of the Sangam age. History says Alappuzha had trade relations with ancient Greece and Rome in B.C and in the Middle Ages, as well as with other parts of India. Alappuzha has a lighthouse, which is a major tourist attraction.

During the month of April and May,it is considered as the best time to visit Haripad town  that comes under Alappuzha district. The Haripad Temple Festival which upholds the rich culture and heritage of the state,is generally  celebrated around this time.

Alternatively come to airports at Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), Kozhikode (Calicut), Chennai, Bangalore and catch a train to Alappuzha.

    Haripad is a town in Alappuzha district. There are about eighteen Hindu temples in this town, among which Subrahmanya Swami Temple is the famous one. This temple is famous for the Haripad Temple Festival, one of the few, which upholds the rich culture and heritage of the state. The Haripad Temple Festival in Alappuzha witnesses three major festivals in a year. The most important one is the Chithira, which takes place in between the month of April and May.

The collection of works in ivory at the Revi Karuna Karan Memorial Museum is indeed an impressive one. The ivory and crystal collections at the museum are one of the largest of its kind. And for those, who admire paintings, the museum houses a good collection of them, especially that of renowned Tanjore paintings. Among the displayed items, a 200 sq. ft. mural is bound to catch the attention of one and all. This mural, depicting the social and cultural heritage of India was created by using only vegetable dyes, and took about 4160 man-hours for its completion.
