Singapore (Singapore)
Singapore, officially the Republic of Singapore, is an island city-state located at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. Singapore, the smallest nation in Southeast Asia, is by orders of magnitude the largest of the three remaining sovereign city-states in the world. Singapore is highly cosmopolitan and diverse with Chinese people forming an ethnic majority with large populations of Malay, Indian and other people. English, Malay, Tamil, and Chinese are the official languages. |
Quick facts
Most airlines fly into Singapore's heavily trafficked Changi International Airport. The best way to get from the airport to the city(20km/12mi away) is by train, but there is also a wide choice of bus and taxi services.
Being on the Equator, Singapore has a good climate throughout the year. The best time to visit for committed shoppers is in June during the Great Singapore Sale, when there are good discounts on most things. Another big local event is the Food Festival in April, although if you are combining Singapore with a beach destination, it may be better to do all the eating on the way home so you still look good in your swimwear. Travelling to Singapore at one of the big festivals will often put a premium on the price of hotels and affect availability, but on the whole, Singapore is a good value place to be, particularly once you are there.
