Description: | Built by Sawai Ishwari Singh in 1749, Isar Lat or Swargasuli the Heaven Piercing Minaret is located at the intersection of Tripolia Bazaar and Gangori Bazaar near the Chhoti Chaupar Chowk and Tripolia Gate. Locally popular as Swargasuli, Isar Lat is a seven-storied imposing minaret, which offers great and breathtaking views of the Old city through its latticed jallis or openings. The entrance to the tower is from its rear side.
The minaret was erected to commemorate the grand victory of Ishwari Singh over the combined armies of Mewar and the Marathas who supported the claim of Madho Singh to the Jaipur throne. However, the rule of Ishwari Singh soon came to an end when he chose to kill himself rather than fight the strong Maratha army. He is also the only Maharaja of Jaipur who was ostracized and was not cremated at Gaitor, the royal crematorium situated at the foothills of Nahargarh fort. |
