Geography: Trichy/Tiruchirapalli is situated in the centre of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It lies at an altitude of 78 m above sea level. There are few hills located within the city, the prominent among them are Golden Rock, Rock Fort, and the one in Thiruverambur. There are reserve forests along the river Cauvery, located to the west/north-west of the city. Because of the river Cauvery/Coleroon flowing through the city/district, the northern part of the district is rich in flora. There are also small pockets of forest cover located in the southern/south-western part of the district.

The major reason that one would want to stay in Trichy is to visit the temples around it. The best time to visit the region would be the months of November to march when the weather remains pleasantly cool.

Trichy is an important place for Tourism as it contains fine temples and important historical monuments. Dominantly important - Rockfort has given the name to it as 'Rock city. Not only, Rockfort added attraction to this place but also, Golden rock locomotive workshop, BHEL (Bharath heavy electrical limited), an ordinance factory (oft) and the Regional engineering college (REC) are some other things which are famous land marks. Trichy is now a bustling city with ample opportunities for business and tourism. Once part of the ancient Chola kingdom, the city boasts of ancient temples at close proximities. The city is also a thriving commercial centre in Tamilnadu and is famous for artificial diamonds, cigars, handloom cloth, glass bangles and wooden and clay toys.

Srirangam : 5km from Trichy is the island town of Srirangam. Spread out over 600 acres, this island town in the Cauvery River is encircled by the temple walls. There are 22 gopurams including India?s tallest (72 meters, 13 storey high), which was built in 1987 while the others date back to the 14th century.

Trichy is well connected by road with important places and Southern Cities. Local Transport : City Bus service to all places of tourist interest from Central Bus Stand and from Chinthamani - Mani Guard Gate Bus Stand. Tourist Taxis, Auto Rickshaws and Cycle Rickshaws are also available.

Thiruchirappalli (Trichy) is well-connected to a number of neighboring cities via important rail heads. Trichy is an important junction on the Southern Railway. It connects Chennai, Thanjavur, Chidambaram, Madurai, Tirupathi, Tuticorin, Tenkasi, Quilon and Rameswaram on the metre gauge and Bangalore, Coimbatore, Mysore, Kochi, Kanyakumari and Mangalore.

Trichy has its own airport which is located around 5 kms away from the main region of the city. A number of international as well as domestic destinations are covered by the flights which operate at the Trichy Airport. Indian Airlines connects Trichy with Chennai, Sharjah, Kuwait and Colombo. Air Lanka Service connects Tiruchirapalli with Colombo.

The Float Festival celebrated during the months of March-April at the Rock Fort Temple draws crowds in huge numbers. Pongal : Pongal is celebrated with great fervor during the month of January. Thus, if you are planning a tour to Thiruchirappalli (Trichy), make sure to chose this period for your vacation. The other festivals and fairs at Trichy include : Mohini Alangaram, Vaikunta Ekadasi, Garuda Seva, Flower Festival and the Car Festival (Dec-Jan) are the other main festivals celebrated.

One of the richest centers of Dravidian culture, the historic city of Thiruchirappalli or Trichy as it is also known as located on the banks of the Kaveri River. Sriranganathaswami Temple, Srirangam : The most important pilgrim centre is located in an island just 7 kms from Tiruchi. Srirangam, surrounded by the waters of river Cauveri on one side and its tributary kollidam on the other, is a 600 acre island-town enclosed within the seven walls of the gigantic Sriranganathaswami Temple. The Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple at Srirangam, is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, one of the most revered deities of Hinduism. Most of it dates from the 14th to 17th centuries, and many people have had a hand in its construction, including the Cheras, Pandyas, Cholas, Hoysalas and rulers from Vijayanagar. Rock Fort Temple/Thayumanaswamy Temple, Trichy: This beautiful Thayumanaswamy Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is adorned with a 100-pillar hall and a vimana covered with gold. Coupled with these are the exquisite architectural masterpieces of the Pallava period, that adorn the walls of the temple and which, add up to make this one of the principle tourist attractions of Trichy. Jambukeshwara temple, Srirangam : Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Jambukeshwara temple is situated 2 kms east of Srirangam and 10 kms from Tiruchirapalli. The temple is named after the elephant which is believed to have worshipped Lord Siva here. Raghavendra Mutt, Srirangam : The life of holy saint called 'Swamy raghavendra' who was a devotee of 'Rama' is described here through many paintings. An important place of workshop for the Madhva community people. A very peaceful place where people come for meditation and satisfaction. Special Poojas are performed in Thursdays.

Rock Fort : Often regarded as the landmark of Trichy. The 83m high Rock Fort is one of the oldest in the world-approximately 3.800 million years, which makes it as old as the rocks of Greenland and older than the Himalayas. The sheer abruptness of its rise is a thrill in itself, but the actual centre of attraction is not the fort itself, of which very little remains, but the temple at the summit. 344 steps hewn out of rock lead to the top where there are inscriptions dating back to the 3rd century.B.C. Hardly anything remains of the ramparts but the Main Guard Gate is still intact. The fort played an important part during the Carnatic wars and according to an inscription, mainly contributed to lay the foundations of the British Empire in India.

Pachamalai Hill Station: Pachamalai is a green hill range, just 80 kms north of Tiruchiraplli via Thuraiyur. It's altitude is 500 m to 1000 meters above msl.'Pachai' means Green and 'malai' means mountain. Pachamalai which spread with a few range is a haven of the tribal of this region, with unique culture and way of life. This mountain range in itself has different small regions like Thenparanadu, kombainadu , Athi Nadu and Vannadu. It's good hill range for trekking to enjoy nature and the animal life small streams and falls add colour to these hills .

This city does not enjoy much of nightlife.

Mukkombu Picnic Center: Mukkombu is a beautiful excursion centre, just 18 kms from Tiruchirappalli on the river banks of Cauvery and Kollidam. This place is called upper dam. It is an attraction for the tourists and also for the people of all ages by its park, greenish garden scenic park, toy train, merry go round, fishing facility, and boating facility.

Trichy is famous for its cigars and cheroots. Check out the NSB Road (outside the Rock Fort) which is the main shopping area. You can get attractive stone-studded (artificial) jewellery inside the Rock Fort temple gates. Cigars, Handloom Saris, Pith models etc. are available at the Big Bazaar street.

Vasanta Bhavan is a popular hotel chain that has outlets across the city. The food here (especially South Indian) is pretty good and the service quite fast.

Museum : It is located in Rani Mangammal Mahal near Super bazaar, Trichy. There are so many sculpures like Mahavirar, Buddha, Vishnu etc. It has fossil, pre history megalithic, Paleolithic and Neolithic tools, Earthern moulds for metals, palm leaf manuscripts, insects, reptiles, birds, mammals. Viralimalai Sanctuary: Viralimalai is a small town situated at a distance of 30-km from Tiruchirappalli and 40-km from Pudukkottai. It is famous for its Murugan temple and the Peacock sanctuary. The town is bestowed with a large number of wild peacocks, which roam around the Murugan temple. Ponnaniyaru Dam: It is situated south of Tiruchirappalli(Trichy). It is 24 kms from Manapparai and 9 kms from Vaiyampatti. Ponnaniyaru dam is built across perumal malai and Chemmalai . This dam site is an ideal place for excursion.

This city is famous for educational institutions, industries and temples. This is main center for all temples in Tamilnadu. One should remove the footwear before entering in temples and mosques. Respect the tradition and culture of the city.
